How do I determine what size Pan Burner I need for the Ceramics for my fireplace?
Ceramics are typically used with Rasmussen Open Front or Rectangular Pan Burners. A standard single-sided fireplace will have a back wall that is narrower than the front opening. The widest part of the pan burner should not be wider than your back wall, while leaving a minimum 3 inch gap next to the front corners. A standard double-sided fireplace is rectangular; therefore a Rectangular Pan Burner is ideal. There should be a minimum 3 inch gap from the edge of the pan burner to the fireplace wall.
How do I determine what size Ceramic Set I need for my fireplace?
Once you have determined the pan burner size, you will need the coordinating ceramic set size. For example, if you need an 18" Rectangular Pan Burner, then you will need an 18" Ceramic Set (Balls, Stones or Shapes).
Do I need filler?
Filler is recommended when using Ceramics. About 2" of Volcanic Ash or Silica Sand should be placed below the Ceramics. Volcanic ash is used in propane/LP and all outdoor applications. Silica Sand for indoor natural gas.

Will Ceramics work in Direct Vent or B-Vent applications?
Ceramics are certified for fully vented fireplaces and fire pits. Direct Vent and B-Vent units are typically sold as certified systems and replacing parts of the system may void the certification and/or warranty, and is not recommended.
Will Ceramics work in Vent-Free applications?
Fire Balls, Stones and Shapes can be used in Vent-Free applications by utilizing the Vent Free Kits on our website.
Do Ceramics get black soot?
Yes. The trade-off of having a realistic, wood-like, yellow flame is the production of soot in a fully vented application. Ceramics paired with a burner creating yellow flames will result in black soot on the Ceramic Balls, Stones and Shapes.
How do I clean the soot on the Ceramics?
Although most people feel that soot is natural looking, others do not care for it. The soot can be brushed or vacuumed away. Also, you can spray the sooty area with water from a spray bottle while the ceramics are hot (but not when lit) and the soot dislodges and goes up the chimney.
Do the Ceramic Kits for Vent-Free applications get black soot?
Absolutely not. The vent-free kits are certified to the vent-free standard. This restrictive standard does not permit soot to be formed at all. Therefore, the placement of the ceramics is in front and behind the flame, not in or through it.
Do Ceramics emit odors or fumes?
The ceramics are composed of a concrete-ceramic compound and do not emit odors or fumes. The color stains applied to the Natural colored Balls, Stones or Shapes are made of ceramic and do not create any odors when burned.
Can ceramics be used with Fire Glass?
The best way to utilize both products is to have the Ceramic Set sit on top of filler (sand, volcanic ash or lava rock) with Fire Glass surrounding the set.
