How do I calculate how much fireglass I need for my fireplace?

There are 2 ways. Both are simple and will require a tape measure

The first method is by using our wizard – Click here to go to Glass Calculator

The second method requires a calculator, pen and paper. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Measure (in inches) the width of your fireplace from left to right and take note of the measurement. If your fireplace is angled back, measure the middle width.

Step 2: Measure (in inches) the depth of the fireplace, from the front to the back wall and take note of the measurement.

Step 3: Use the calculator to multiply the width (inches) by depth (inches)

Step 4: Multiply the total by 3 or 4 depending on how deep you want the glass to be

Step 5: Divide total by 19

This number represents how many pounds of fireglass you will need for your fireplace.

We recommend using approximately 70% in Clear Fireglass as a base and the remaining 30% in the Colored Fireglass that you prefer. This is the most cost-efficient approach and will allow you to update your color at a minimal expense.

The second method requires a calculator, pen and paper. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Measure (in inches) the diameter of your fire pit and take note of the measurement.

Step 2: If you want the glass to be flush with the top of the fire pit, measure the depth in inches of the fire pit and take note of that dimension. If you would like the glass to be raised add between 2 and 4 inches to the depth and take note of that dimension.

Step 3: Use the calculator to multiply the diameter (inches) by the diameter (inches)

Step 4: Multiply the total by the depth measured in Step 2.

Step 5: Divide total by 24

This number represents how many pounds of fireglass you will need for your fireplace.

You can use approximately 50% Clear fireglass as a base and the remaining 50% in the Colored fireglass that you prefer. This is the most cost-efficient approach and will allow you to update your color at a minimal expense. If your fire pit is really deep you may want to purchase some of our Fire Rock as a filler, as it will lessen the expense of the project.

What colors are available?

We have a wide range of colors to choose from. Click here for 1/4 Inch Fire Glass, Click here for Reflective Fire Glass, Click here for 1/2 Inch Fire Glass, Click here for Accent Fire Glass

Is the glass used to create this product made from old glass?

Absolutely Not! Our product is new and unused glass, made specifically for this application.

Does the fireglass ever burn or fade?

Definitely Not! The process used to manufacture our glass ensures that it will not melt, degrade or emit toxic fumes. It is also guaranteed to keep its brilliant color.

Is there clean up or maintenance required?

When using this glass, there is no soot, dirt or ashes. Therefore your fireplace always looks nice and clean even when you’re not using it.

Which color should I choose?

One of the beauties of this product is its versatility. You have the option of choosing multiple colors and the ability to mix and match them as you desire to create a custom look. A popular combination is a Clear base and a mixture of Black and Bronze as it ties in nicely with wood tones, natural stone and granite and has a subtle touch of gold. If you are looking for something a little brighter and more contemporary you may consider a Clear base, a hint of Black for contrast and Arctic Blue.

Do I have to mix the colors?

No. Most people just want one solid color often times using the clear as a filler.

What is Reflective Glass?

Our innovative idea behind reflective glass is simple. We took the idea of a reflection in a mirror and implemented a technology allowing the reflective glass to amplify the intensity of the color and to create a more vibrant and mesmerizing flame. Whether the fireplace is in use or not, the reflective fireglass will be equally effective as the sunlight and interior lights reflect to recreate the sparkle and shine.

Do I need a screen or doors on my fireplace to use fireglass?

No. In fact, this is one of the advantages of using this product. The fireglass does not burn nor are there popping cinders or ashes being emitted from the fireplace or fire pit. For the safety of your pets or young children, we recommend using a screen or doors.

Does this product produce more heat?

Yes. Our fireglass radiates more than 5 times the amount of heat than an artificial log, real wood or lava rock.

I heard that artificial logs contain asbestos, is this true?

Yes. Most artificial logs contain asbestos fibers, which can cause a variety of diseases, some of which can be fatal if inhaled. The American Lung Association says, "Avoid smoke from wood stoves, fireplaces and cigarettes - improve life one breath at a time.”

Can I install fireglass myself?

Yes. It’s a simple process. You can install any component of the system by yourself. However, if you feel uncomfortable please call a professional to assist you.

Can I cover my gas pipe with fireglass?

Yes. Most of our clients prefer to cover the gas inlet pipe as well as the flex pipe. This is an optional decision as it does increase the amount of glass purchased but is definitely worth it.

How should the burner be installed in my fireplace?

We recommend placing the burner hole-side down, in the center and slightly towards the front opening of your fireplace. We do this because the flame has a tendency to be drawn up and moves towards the rear wall.

How should the burner be installed in my fire pit?

When installing the burner outside with the natural elements we recommend placing the burner hole-side down. This will help keep water out of the gas line. If the burner is protected, installing the hole-side up will give you a bigger flame.

What can I do about my existing dirty fireplace walls? Can I clean or improve them?

Purchase a cleaning solution at your local grocery store, hardware store or specialty fireplace store to clean the soot off the wall. Afterward, use a flame and heat resistant paint to give your walls a fresh look.

What type of paint should I use?

A flame- and heat- resistant fireplace or barbecue paint. Consider a paint that will resist heat beyond 1200 degrees. Regular paint will not be sufficient.

Should I clean the fireglass?

If the fireglass is inside, there is no need to clean it, unless foreign debris is found. If your fireglass is outside, occasionally clean them of debris as the flame will cause it to burn and stain your fireglass.

Can I cook in the fire pit after installing fireglass?

Cooking with fireglass is not recommended. Drops of food may cause stains on the fireglass.

Will Fire Glass work in direct vent or b-vent applications?

Fire Glass is certified for completely vented fireplaces and fire pits, therefore it is recommended to be used in vented applications. Direct vent and b-vent units are typically sold as certified systems and replacing parts of the system may void the certification or warranty.

Will Fire Glass work in vent-free applications?

Fire Glass can be used in a vent-free application when paired with a certified vent-free burner.

Can I use Fire Glass with a propane fireplace or fire pit?

Yes. We recommend using our Propane-Air Mixer in a propane application. This device helps reduce the amount of soot that propane causes. If you are using natural gas, you do not need a Propane-Air Mixer.
